These downsizing decisions were driven by the challenging economic conditions, the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, business misjudgments, and the looming possibility of a recession.

Regarding hiring trends, the tech industry was predicted to experience a rebound in 2024, with initial indications of improvement and an anticipated increase in global IT spending. However, despite these positive signs, there have been ongoing layoffs in 2024, amounting to a total of 39,500 job cuts thus far.

The layoffs occurring in 2024 can be viewed as an extension of the job reductions announced in 2023. While there are early signs of recovery within the industry, employment continues to be affected, and certain layoffs in 2024 can be attributed to the restructuring and consolidation of teams within tech companies. Experts remain hopeful that the majority of large-scale layoffs are now in the past as hiring begins to return to normal levels.

The hiring patterns in the technology sector for the year 2024 suggest an ongoing need for professionals who possess expertise in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, cloud computing, green computing, and full-stack development.

This year, tech companies will primarily be focused on recruiting individuals for positions related to cloud, security and privacy, software development, AI, Machine Learning, automation, system upgrades, and data integration and analytics. 

Despite notable layoffs in major tech firms, the overall job market in the technology industry is still expanding. In fact, the industry added 240,000 jobs in 2023, marking a 50% increase from the previous year. Moreover, it is projected that tech jobs will grow by 4.2% in 2024. The demand for tech professionals remains strong, with 61% of tech managers planning to hire for new positions in the coming year. However, there are indications of a slowdown in job postings within the technology sector, with hiring plans reverting to normal levels after experiencing significant growth. Therefore, while the tech industry continues to present new opportunities, several factors such as economic conditions and stock valuations could potentially impact hiring trends.
